Hart Island Cemetery
Hart Island Cemetery is east of City Island and Long Island Sound. Potter’s filed is the resting place for the unclaimed, unidentified or forgotten residents of our city. The first body was buried on April 20, 1869. Today, over one million bodies occupy the 101-acre potter's field just east of The Bronx, and is the largest potter's field in the United States. Currently the property is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Corrections and access to the island is appalling; families have demanded that the process to visit and pay homage to their loved ones must be overhauled. There is an uncertainty of most people that were laid to rest at the site due to the negligence of legal guardians, the carefree nature of borrowing bodies for medical cadavers, and other erroneous circumstances.
